Judge William "Bill" Altfield

Miami-Dade County Court

The Honorable William Altfield was appointed to the Miami-Dade County Court bench by Governor Rick Scott in August of 2011.  Judge Altfield is currently assigned to the Civil Division at the historic Dade County Courthouse.  He previously presided over domestic violence cases at the Lawson E. Thomas Family Courthouse Center.  Judge Altfield  also presided in the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building handling criminal traffic and misdemeanor prosecutions.   His first judicial assignment was at the South Dade Justice Center where he presided over criminal prosecutions and civil domestic violence injunction hearings.  

Prior to his judicial appointment, Judge Altfield was a senior prosecutor in the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office for over 24 years.  Judge Altfield handled many high profile cases including Capital Sexual Battery prosecutions and Public Corruption investigations and prosecutions.

Judge Altfield volunteers in many aspects of our community,  He is the judicial liason and volunteer judge in the Teen Court program in conjunction with the Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust and the Miami-Dade County Public School system.  Judge Altfield is a member of the Legal Needs of Children Committee with the Florida Bar and is currently a faculty member of the Florida Supreme Court’s Justice Teaching Project.  Judge Altfield is also a faculty member of the Conference of County Court Judges and the Advanced Judicial Studies program wherein he teaches judges throughout the State of Florida   Judge Altfield is a board member of Casa Valentina assisting our youth who age out of foster care.  He has also been a big brother with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.  He was a past board member of the League of Prosecutors. He also volunteered on Florida Bar Committees including chairing the Unlicensed Practice of Law Committee (11B) and serving as vice-chair and member of the Florida Bar  Grievance Committee (11i).  Judge Altfield was also a chairperson and member of the State Attorney’s Office Recruitment Committee for over 17 years. 

As an Assistant State Attorney, Judge Altfield was cross-designated three times as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and prosecuted civil rights violations on behalf of the United States.

As an Assistant State Attorney, Judge Altfield lectured to various members of law enforcement on "Garrity" and Fourth Amendment issues. He has also spoken to members of the community who engage in business transactions with Miami-Dade County as well as public employees regarding ethics in government and the criminal penalties involved in the enforcement of breaches of the public trust.

Judge Altfield also volunteers on a yearly basis as a judge for the F.I.U. College of Law oral argument competitions as well as the University of Miami School of Law mock trial competitions. In addition, he has addressed third-year law students at the University of Miami on various issues including the benefits of acting and acting techniques for the trial lawyer.   Judge Altfield has also served for many years as a mentor with the Take Stock in Children program.


Judge Altfield is a founding Board Member, former President and Artistic Producing Director of the Miami Acting Company, wherein he also performs in local theater productions in Miami-Dade and Monroe County.  His latest performance was as Daddy Warbucks in the highly successful run of  Annie at  Pinecrest Gardens Theater in Pinecrest.  Judge Altfield has performed in many roles including The Modern Major General in Pirates of Penzance and Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. 


Judge Altfield is married to Sharon Altfield who has been a teacher in our community for over 35 years teaching emotionally handicapped, autistic, special needs and gifted students.   She has devoted the last 21 years of her professional career at Pinecrest Elementary School  where she currently teaches in the Gifted program.  They have two beautiful daughters, Sydney and Rachel.  Sydney and Rachel graduated from the University of Central Florida where they were each elected in different years as Vice President of Student Government.  They both work for non-profit organizations.   Judge Altfield and his family are members of Young Israel of Kendall Congregation.
